"Homage to R.M."
This painting is an homage to a great artistic hero of mine, Robert Motherwell. It's a mash-up of his "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" series and his "Open" series. Both featured strong, uncomplicated imagery with sparse imagery and very limited color palettes. Working within those self-imposed constraints Motherwell still managed IMHO, to make powerful works, that though relatively uncomplicated, carried enormous weight and emotional depth.
I've found over time that this idea of self-imposed constraints is key to making strong art. Too many colors, and too much motion in both music and visual work tends to dilute the impact. Though it's true that accepted, or popular approaches to art vary from artist to artist, and era to era, some basic truths remain. Clarity of vision is the goal.
